In addition to the various sports programs at Heritage School, several co-curricular opportunities are available with more on the horizon!
The Student Council at Heritage School is a vital organization which supports the school Mission Statement through service to the school and the community. Student Council officers organize food drives, clothing collection for the needy, and serve the school in various ways as well as planning several school dances, including the popular spring formal. Student Council also erects the Christmas tree in the Great Hall and provides refreshment and social time for students during Christmas. In addition, the officers of Student Council lead or delegate the leading of the weekly Wednesday Chapel as they pray, make announcements, lead the worship singing, lead the pledge to the flag, and introduce the guest speaker or student presentations.
Heritage School proudly sponsors its own chapter of the Junior Classical League. As a school, we teach Latin in grades 3-8. “Formed in 1936, the National Junior Classical League (NJCL) is an organization of junior and senior high school students sponsored by the American Classical League. Composed of local and state/provincial chapters across the United States, Canada, and Australia, it is the largest Classical organization in the world today with over 50,000 members. Its purpose is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity. The Heritage chapter competes in the annual area and State Latin contests and has won many awards. Our Latin students compete in multiple areas of interest. JCL offers academic contests in Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Sight Reading, Mythology, Derivatives both Latin and Greek, Literature, History, Maps, and many more. Students can learn to recite Latin Oratory or Dramatic Interpretation by Cicero, Virgil, and other ancient authors. Our young classicists create models, mosaics, paintings, sculptures, and costumes based upon Greco-Roman history and literature. Still others compete in Olympika races and athletic events. At the end of the year the logic students compete in the nation-wide National Latin Exam and have won academic medals in Latin.
“I love to encourage my Latin students to participate in National Junior Classical League because it brings Latin out of the textbook and into real life. There is something for everyone to enjoy!”---Suzanne McComack, Latin Teacher, Heritage Logic School
