Jacob Huser defines the term “Character," both on the field and off. This past week, he was awarded the Bulsworth Character Award for 2016. His varsity Head Coach, Tim Shipman, presented the award to Jacob at home with his family, as the recent Heritage School graduate was preparing to depart for College Station where he’ll study Sports Medicine at Texas A&M University. Jacob is the son of Steve and Shawna Huser of Fredericksburg.
The Bulsworth is a national award, not for performance on the field; instead, honoring character and sportsmanship in high school football. The late Brandon Bulsworth arrived on the University of Arkansas campus in 1994 as a walk-on. He had no money, no blue-chip status, and no Division 1 scholarship offers. Through his legendary work ethic and ceaseless determination to improve, Brandon not only earned a full athletic scholarship but was also named team captain, All-SEC and the first All-American from Arkansas in a decade. He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1999 and his coaches predicted he would start as a rookie.Just eleven days later, he was killed in a head-on automobile collision. Today, the University of Arkansas has created an endowment in his memory—awarding eighteen $5,000 academic scholarships and one $10,000 athletic scholarship to an outstanding walk-on Razorback player. Additionally, the Brandon Bulsworth Foundation awards a trophy to the outstanding D-1 football player who began his career as a walk-on.
"Our nation needs to place a higher value on character. The Burlsworth Character Award honors the high school football player who may or may not be a top athletic performer, but who represents the ideals and values that Brandon Burlsworth had: to give 100 percent on the field and to stand as a moral example to his team. We hope that the award encourages the honoree to continue on his path of excellence, and inspires others to follow his lead."
—Marty Bulsworth, Bulsworth Foundation President
Heritage School Varsity and Junior High football players attended a special screening of “Greater,” the film production of the Brandon Bulsworth story in the fall of 2016 at Fritztown Cinema. The movie is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
